REGIONAL COLLECTION
FRANCE

From Alsace, Lorraine, the Jura and Doubs to Franche-Comté, Rhône, Ain and Calvados and even the Paris basin, the French regional collection contains fossils, samples of rock and examples of facies from the whole of France, ordered and arranged by political province.

The areas near the border with Switzerland are much better represented and documented than the western and northern regions of France. However, this collection still provides a wonderful overview of the main fossils and types of rocks found in the country. The rocks here are mostly sediments.

The core of the collection was established between 1880 and 1930. Its principal collectors were Paul Choffat, Mathieu Mieg, Frédéric-Luis Koby, Andreas Gutzwiller, August Buxtorf and later Carl Lüdin.
