Teaching and demonstration collection
The teaching and demonstration collection at the Natural History Museum Basel illustrates geological and palaeontological phenomena and processes through the use of informative specimens.
The collection in particular includes examples of the following phenomena: different forms of weathering, erosion and sedimentation, terrestrial and marine sediments, exogenic processes in the sea, sediments and sedimentary rock, magmatic rocks, tectonics, rock formation and metamorphosis.
Covering the most important fossil groups of invertebrates such as ammonites, mussels and snails, the teaching and demonstration collection contains particularly informative objects and, for comparative purposes, examples of animals living today.
Designed as a collection for real use, it serves a teaching and demonstration purpose as well as being used for internal research and for display to the general public. It can be viewed and, by arrangement, used by people who want to teach others about geological matters.
