Other groups of invertebrates Invertebrata
In addition to the collections of insects, spiders and molluscs, the Natural History Museum Basel has a variety of other collections of invertebrates. These cover a vast array of different species, from brachiopods to woodlice.
The collections of the remaining invertebrates include specimens from Switzerland, but also from far-off regions from every continent in the world. These specimens were mainly gathered on expeditions and research trips at the end of the 19th and start of the 20th centuries.
The specimens are held as mounts, dry material, alcohol-preserved and Microscope slides.
The following groups feature in the collections: Sponges (Porifera), jellyfish (Cnidaria), echinoderms (Echinoderma), brachiopods (Brachiopoda), flatworms (Turbellaria), flukes (Trematoda), tapeworms (Cestodes), ribbon worms (Nemertini), roundworms or tube worms (Aschelminthes), polychaetes (Polychaeta), oligochaetes (Oligochaeta), leeches (Hirudinea), tongue worms (Linguatulida/Pentastomida), velvet worms (Onychophora), centipedes and millipedes (Myriapoda), crabs and lobsters (Crustacea), woodlice (Isopoda) and finally individual examples of various small groups.
The indiviadual collections include many type examples.
